Warrior (Virabhadra)
It may seem strange to name a yoga pose after a warrior as yogis are often known for their non-violent ways (ahimsa) but one of the most revered yoga texts, the Bhagavad-Gita is based around a dialogue between two famous warriors, Krishna and Arjuna. What's really being commemorated is the βspiritual warriorβ who courageously does battle every day with the universal enemy of self-ignorance (avidya), the source of suffering.
The benefits of the warrior asanas are to open up the chest, stretch the shoulders, neck and back whilst activating the core and strengthening the legs.
It is also an excellent chance to focus on being present, feeling the feet on the floor and the air in your lungs!
